Can I claim Universal Credit childcare if I am self-employed?

Yes. There is no rule that excludes self-employed parents. You need to be genuinely working and able to show your earnings, but freelancers, contractors and small business owners can all claim the childcare element of UC on the same 85% basis as employees.

How long does it take to get reimbursed?

Your childcare reimbursement is added to your next monthly Universal Credit payment, which lands seven days after the end of the assessment period in which you reported the costs. If you paid a bill near the start of an assessment period, you could wait around five weeks before the money is back in your account.

Can I use Universal Credit for a babysitter or nanny?

Only if they are registered with Ofsted (or the equivalent regulator in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland). Most babysitters in the UK are not registered, so most babysitting will not count. Nannies sometimes join the Ofsted voluntary register - ask your nanny directly if you are not sure.

Does the two-child limit apply to the childcare element?

The two-child limit on the standard Universal Credit child element was removed from 6 April 2026. The childcare element has always paid for all eligible children regardless, and from 2026 the cap rises by £736.06 per child beyond the second.

What if my partner does not work?

For couples, both partners usually need to be in work (or have accepted a job) to claim the childcare element. The exception is if one partner cannot work because of a health condition assessed through the Work Capability Assessment, has formal caring responsibilities, or is in approved training.

Can I claim if I am on maternity leave?

Yes, if you are still classed as employed and intend to return to work. You can claim for childcare for older children while you are on maternity leave with the youngest. Talk to your work coach about how to report this correctly.
