How do I ask my employer to offer childcare support?

Ask in writing, to the person or team responsible for employee benefits, with a specific request and a short business case. "Can we have more help with childcare?" is easy to nod along to and forget. "Could we pilot back-up childcare for a year, starting with the parents' network?" is something a benefits manager can actually price and take to a budget meeting.

Can I ask my employer for help with childcare costs?

Yes, and many employers already fund benefits such as back-up childcare or paid emergency leave. The most effective way to ask is in writing to whoever owns benefits, with a specific suggestion and a short business case focused on absence and retention.

Is flexible working a day-one right in the UK?

Yes. Employees in Great Britain can make a statutory flexible working request from their first day in a job. Acas guidance says you can make up to two requests in any 12 months, and your employer must decide, including any appeal, within two months. It is a right to request, not a guarantee of approval.

How do I request a back-up childcare benefit?

Write to your HR or benefits team suggesting a time-limited pilot of back-up childcare, with a set number of funded days or hours per employee. Include evidence of how often childcare problems cause absence, ideally from a quick poll of colleagues, and offer to help measure the results.
