What age do holiday clubs in the UK accept?

Most holiday clubs cater for children aged 4 or 5 (reception age) up to around 11 or 12. Some specialist providers extend to 14 or even 16, particularly for activity-specific camps. Children under 4 are rarely accepted at standard holiday clubs - for this age group, you will generally need a nursery, childminder or in-home carer during the school holidays.

How much do holiday clubs cost in the UK?

According to the Coram Family and Childcare Holiday Childcare Survey 2025, the average cost of a holiday club place is £179 per child per week, adding up to around £1,075 for a six-week summer holiday. Costs vary by region, with Wales averaging £209.60 per week and inner London families typically paying above the national average. Early drop-off and late pick-up add-on sessions usually cost extra.

Can I use Tax-Free Childcare to pay for holiday clubs?

Yes, if the holiday club is registered with Ofsted (or the equivalent regulator in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland). Tax-Free Childcare tops up your payments by 20%, with the government adding £2 for every £8 you contribute - up to £2,000 per child per year. Not every holiday club is Ofsted registered, so check before booking if you plan to use the scheme.

What is the HAF programme and who is eligible?

The Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme is a government-funded scheme that provides free holiday club places - including activities and a healthy meal - to children from reception to Year 11 who receive benefits-related Free School Meals. It runs during Easter, summer and Christmas holidays and is administered by local authorities in England. Contact your local council or your child's school to check eligibility and find places in your area.

How do I find a holiday club near me?

Start with your local authority's Family Information Service, which maintains a directory of Ofsted-registered childcare providers in your area. Your child's school is also a good source - many schools run their own holiday clubs or have recommendations. Local leisure centres, sports clubs and word of mouth from other parents at school are all reliable ways to find good-quality school holiday clubs in your area.

What happens if my holiday club does not cover all my working hours?

Most holiday clubs run from around 8.30am to 5.30pm at most, and many have shorter standard hours with wraparound add-ons available. If the club does not cover your full working day, or if you need cover on days the club is closed, an in-home babysitter or nanny can bridge the gap. Apps like Bubble let you find vetted, local carers who can do drop-offs and pick-ups or look after children for a full day at home.
