How long does it take for a child to adjust to a new babysitter?

Most children adjust within two to four sits. Some adjust within one sit. A few take longer depending on the child's temperament, the sitter's confidence, consistency of routines, and whether the child has prior experience with separation.

Should I tell my child I'm leaving, or sneak away?

Always tell your child you're leaving. Sneaking away teaches them that you might disappear without warning, which increases anxiety. A calm goodbye ritual and a clear statement ('I'm going now') is much better, even if it triggers tears in the moment.

Is it okay if my child cries when I leave?

Yes. Crying at goodbye is normal and doesn't mean anything is wrong. The key is staying calm, acknowledging the feeling, reminding them they're safe, and leaving. They usually calm within minutes once you're out of sight.

Can I call the sitter to check on my child?

It's better not to. Frequent check-ins can keep your child thinking about you and make them sad. Arrange one photo with the sitter mid-sit (if it's a long day) and get a full debrief when you pick up.

What if my child says they don't like the babysitter?

Listen without dismissing them. If there are specific concerns (the sitter seems rough, your child reports not feeling safe), pay attention. You can try a different sitter. But if your child simply says 'I wanted you to stay,' it's often just adjustment anxiety, not a red flag.
