What's the most cost-effective childcare benefit we can offer?

Signposting Tax-Free Childcare and funded hours costs almost nothing, so every employer should do it. For a funded benefit, back-up childcare tends to give the most direct return because it turns days of unplanned absence into working days, and you only pay for the hours employees use on top of a service fee. Flexible working is also low cost, though it needs good management to work.

Can we pay into our employees' Tax-Free Childcare accounts?

No. Tax-Free Childcare is a scheme between parents and HMRC, and employers can't contribute to an employee's account. Your role is to make sure staff know it exists and point them to GOV.UK to check eligibility. Through the scheme, the government adds £2 for every £8 parents pay in, up to £2,000 per child a year (£4,000 for a disabled child).

Are childcare benefits taxable for employees?

It depends on how the benefit is structured, and cash, reimbursed and directly provided benefits are treated differently. HMRC's guidance on expenses and benefits for childcare sets out the rules, and your payroll team or tax adviser should confirm the treatment for your scheme. Bubble for Work provides a monthly PAYE report to help payroll teams with benefit-in-kind calculations.

How is back-up childcare different from a childcare allowance?

Back-up childcare provides vetted care at short notice when normal arrangements fail, so it protects specific working days. An allowance is a sum of money towards regular childcare costs, which eases the monthly bill but doesn't find anyone to look after a child when the nursery closes. Many employers offer both, or use a back-up care allowance that also reimburses holiday clubs.
