What is a good alternative to a work Christmas party?

Popular alternatives include a long daytime lunch, an escape room, a wreath-making workshop or volunteering together followed by a meal. Some employers offer a gift or an extra afternoon off instead. A 2023 Censuswide survey for NerdWallet found that only 9% of UK employees picked a Christmas party over alternatives such as vouchers, gifts or a day off.

How do you make a work Christmas party inclusive?

Make it optional, ask about dietary and accessibility needs in advance, and offer good alcohol-free drinks. Hold it at a time parents and carers can manage, such as a lunchtime or afternoon, and give at least six weeks' notice. Choose an activity so the party doesn't revolve around drinking.

What are some fun work Christmas party games?

Good work Christmas party games include a Christmas quiz, a jumper competition, festive bingo, charades, name that tune and a gingerbread decorating contest. Keep games short and optional, and avoid drinking games or anything that singles people out.

How do you run a virtual Christmas party?

Keep it to around 90 minutes, send something to people's homes beforehand such as a tasting kit or craft kit, and give the call a clear activity like a quiz or an online murder mystery. Use breakout rooms for smaller group chats.

Should a work Christmas party be in the day or evening?

A daytime party is usually easier for parents, carers, non-drinkers and people with long commutes. If you hold it in the evening, give lots of notice and consider helping staff with childcare costs so working parents can join in.
