7 New Year’s Resolutions for Parents

Every January, we make a number of unrealistic resolutions for the new year, from learning a language or travelling to new countries to volunteering or running a marathon. Instead of adding to your to-do list, make 2017 the year you get more rest, let go of parental guilt and make some more time for yourself. Here are 7 resolutions that every parent needs to make this year (and you can always do that marathon too if you really want to…):

  1. Put aside some time each week to do something just for you. Not work. Not spending time with the kids. Not housework. Something that you might otherwise consider a ‘waste of time’. Watch reality TV, flick through a magazine, or spend an obscene amount of time sorting through your Pinterest boards.
  1. Give yourself a break. There’s no such thing as the perfect parent. Instead of focusing on the things you can’t/don’t do, make a conscious effort to notice the great things you do. You could even write them down so you can look back on them if you need a boost.
  1. Resolve to give 100% to whatever you’re doing at any given moment, whether it’s working, seeing friends or playing with the kids. You’ll be more productive, and feel less guilty about time away from the children, knowing that they have your full attention when you are there.
  1. Get more sleep! Easier said than done, of course. Try shutting down Facebook, and turning off your phone, at a set time each evening, before devoting some time to winding down before bed.
  1. Recognise that you can’t do it all and think about what’s going to give. What can you outsource? The cleaning, perhaps? Or some admin work within your business?
  1. Make some time for your other half. This doesn’t have to mean ‘date night’, but simply setting aside time to connect with one another without the kids, even if it’s just over a post-bedtime bottle of wine in your living room
  1. Learn to say no. You don’t have to be on the PTA, bake homemade cakes for school sales, or host playdates. Say yes to the things that you genuinely want to do, and have time for, and let everything else go.
